ReLEAF in Valencia – partners visit field demo site in Spain

The ReLEAF project is dedicated to developing, producing, and demonstrating the agronomic and environmental performance of safe, sustainable, and efficient bio-based fertilizers (BBFs). To achieve this, the project will assess the agronomic effectiveness and impact on soil quality of the developed BBFs through large-scale field demonstrations at four sites.

The primary demonstration site is located in Valencia, Spain, while additional field sites in France and Poland will replicate the studies under different climatic conditions and with different crops.

Earlier this year, ReLEAF’s project coordinator, Leitat, conducted a site visit to the experimental fields of project partner Anecoop in Valencia. During this visit, they went to the Camp de Turia wastewater treatment plant to assess the location of pilot plants and address logistical considerations related to material flows. Of course, there was also some time to try local fruits for a sweet treat.

Anecoop’s 20-hectare experimental field, the largest private agricultural trial site in Europe, serves as a testing ground for over 500 fruit and vegetable varieties and evaluating the agronomic performance of new fertilizer formulations. As part of the project’s validation phase, Anecoop will test fertilized mulching films, planting pots, and BBFs on crops such as broccoli, lettuce, and watermelon, assessing both agronomic performance and soil health. Additionally, agricultural workshops featuring field demonstrations will be organized to engage stakeholders, assess potential risks and benefits, and facilitate market acceptance.
