ReLEAF Project Biannual Consortium Meeting in Lisbon

On November 21 and 22, over 40 partners from across Europe gathered—some in person in Lisbon, others online—for ReLEAF’s biannual meeting. Partners shared the latest updates on their quest to transform agriculture and waste management.

A critical aspect of the project involves understanding and adhering to regulations governing fertilizer production. The consortium is diligently working to ensure that their innovative products meet the requirements of European Regulation 2019/1009 and various national laws. To achieve this, the ReLeaf team is developing a comprehensive regulatory framework, coordinating meetings with partners to align expectations, and preparing questionnaires to gather important information from raw material suppliers and end-users.

ReLeaf’s core mission is to uncover valuable resources in what we typically discard. The scientists have been analyzing everything from fruit and vegetable scraps to fish processing leftovers and sewage sludge. These waste materials are rich in nutrients essential for plant growth. By carefully extracting and refining these elements within regulatory guidelines, we can create fertilizers that are both effective and environmentally friendly.

The project’s implications are far-reaching. By producing fertilizers from waste that comply with regulations, farmers could reduce their reliance on synthetic fertilizers, which are energy-intensive to produce and can harm the environment.

The ReLEAF consortium understands that for innovation to succeed, it must meet the needs of its users. By involving stakeholders through questionnaires and meetings, we are gathering valuable insights to shape products.

While the journey presents technical and regulatory hurdles, partners remain optimistic. Scaling up laboratory successes to industrial levels requires careful planning and strict adherence to regulations, but the ReLEAF project is prepared.

Ultimately, it’s about leaving the world a better place for the next generation. By ensuring products are safe and compliant, our partners are excited to be part of that journey.

They encourage everyone to think differently about waste and consider how everyday actions can contribute to a more sustainable world. By harnessing the potential of bio-waste and navigating regulatory landscapes, ReLEAF aims to reduce environmental impact, support sustainable agriculture, and promote a circular economy.
