ReLEAF x LANDFEED joint session on resource recovery at ESNI-NERM 2026

The ESNI-NERM 2026 Conference took place in April 2026, bringing together researchers, industry representatives, policymakers, and practitioners working on nutrient management and circular bioeconomy solutions. The event provided a platform to exchange knowledge, share research results, and discuss innovative approaches to improving nutrient use efficiency and sustainability across food and agricultural systems.

As part of the programme, ReLEAF together with the LANDFEED project hosted a joint session titled “Tailored Technologies for Resource Recovery from Complex Streams.” The session took place on 28 April at 15:45 within the parallel afternoon sessions dedicated to EU-funded projects.

The session focused on how complex bio-waste streams can be transformed into valuable resources. Drawing on real-world applications from both projects, it showcased how materials such as urban food waste, sewage sludge, fish processing residues, and agricultural by-products can be converted into bio-based fertilisers, biostimulants, and microbial biomass.

Participants were introduced to a range of technologies, including enzymatic treatments, twin-screw extrusion, fermentation, and hydrolysis. These processes enable the production of both organic and inorganic fertilisers, as well as other bio-based products with applications in sustainable agriculture.

By highlighting practical examples and ongoing research, the session contributed to discussions on advancing nutrient recovery and supporting the transition towards more circular and resource-efficient food systems.
